About Me

I’m Christopher “Skwirl” Barrett, the heart and hands behind Skwirl’s Bakery. Baking isn’t just a profession for me—it’s a legacy, a passion, and a connection to my roots. With over 25 years of experience and three generations of culinary influence, I take pride in creating high-quality, made-to-order desserts that bring joy to every occasion.

My journey is shaped by more than just the kitchen. I come from a diverse and deeply rooted heritage, drawing strength from both my Monacan Indian ancestors of the Sparrow and Johns family, my English settler lineage through the Beverley family’ and West Indies through Barrett families. From the Monacan side, I inherited resilience, adaptability, and a deep respect for natural ingredients and traditional methods. From the Beverley and Barrett lineage, I carry forward a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a passion for excellence—values that were also embodied by my ancestors who served as Revolutionary War officers, including Colonels, Captains, and Lieutenants. Their courage, leadership, and perseverance inspire me in everything I do, from running my business to advocating for families.

Beyond Skwirl’s Bakery, I am the founder of Families R. Us, where I’ve spent over 15 years helping reconnect lost loved ones, a mission that’s deeply personal as a former foster child myself. I also manage the Abraham Rogers Family page, preserving and honoring the history of our ancestors. My passion for genealogy and history extends to my work as a novice writer in African American history, where I strive to shed light on untold stories and cultural legacies.

Every dessert I create is more than just a sweet treat—it’s a reflection of tradition, passion, and the joy of bringing people together.

Serving sweet moments, one dessert at a time!
